Our Legacy & Origins

The Indian Water Works Association (IWWA) - Kolkata Centre was founded in 1974 by a distinguished group of municipal water engineers, public health administrators, and environmental researchers. Their shared aim was to create an autonomous forum dedicated to advancing the science and engineering practice of water management in Kolkata and Eastern India.

Kolkata's water supply system is one of the oldest in Asia, starting with the establishment of the Palta Water Works in 1865 and the iconic Tallah Elevated Tank in 1909. IWWA Kolkata has preserved this engineering legacy while steering modern practices in coagulation, rapid gravity filtration, hydraulic modeling, and wastewater recycling.

"To foster technical fellowship, promote scientific research, and ensure safe, reliable water supplies for millions of urban and peri-urban citizens."
